New Stuff You Should Know:

We are sad to announce that Myrtle King passed away on Monday, May 3, 2010. The Wake service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4, at the Victory Baptist Church located at 2301 SE 15th Street, between Bryant and Eastern Avenues east of I-35. Viewing will be at the church all day Wednesday. The funeral service will be held at the church at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 6th.

(NEW 5/4/10) We have just been informed that there will not be a wake and that the viewing will be on Wednesday at John Ireland Funeral Home, 120 S Broadway, in Moore. The funeral is still scheduled to be held at the church at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. Lunch will be served at the church at 12:00 noon prior to the service. It will be a pot luck affair, so everyone is encouraged to bring a dish.

We will all miss Myrtle for many reasons, and the Alliance will remember her many years of hard work, service, dedication and guidance.

The Choctaw Nation is holding its annual Trail of Tears Walk at Tuskahoma on Saturday, May 15, 2010. We have asked the Nation to provide a bus for us but we have not yet received approval of our request. If approved, we will meet at the OCTA building at 5:30 a.m. and leave at 6:00 a.m. sharp. We will probably have a rest/snack stop going each way. There will be a free lunch after the Walk. We will return after lunch and will probably arrive back here around 6:00 p.m.

We expect that our request will be approved so we are making a list of passengers. We will have the list at the May 10 general meeting. Or, you can call Stormy Bryant at (405) 755-6983 or email him at tempesto@swbell.net to get on the list. Be sure to leave your telephone number so we can call you if there are any changes. (NEW) We now have a full load of 55 passengers signed up to ride the bus. These people will have first call on the seats, but if they are not present by 6:00 a.m. we will begin seating alternates. You are welcome to put your name on the list as an alternate and to show up at 5:30 a.m. on May 15th in case any of the first 55 do not show up. We will seat alternates in the order their names appear on the list.

The Walk is usually two or three miles long. However, you don't have to actually make the walk. Many folks just go, visit with friends, enjoy the Capitol grounds and the museum, and eat lunch. Some take folding chairs so they can sit under the trees. The Nation always has paramedics patrolling the Walk and shuttle buses if you decide to quit part way. In the past the Nation has provided fruits, pastries and drinks at the starting place of the Walk.

If you want to order a T-shirt or cap in advance the order form is on page 8 of the April, 2010 issue of the Bishinik.

Let's have a big turnout to honor our ancestors and to remember the the trials, travails and privations they endured to get here! Also, we need to have a good turnout to show the Nation that it is worth sending a bus all the way to Oklahoma City for us.

Our next general membership meeting will be on Monday, May 10, 2010. It was announced at the April general meeting that Myrtle King had resigned her board seat, which is Position No. 5. An election will be held at the May meeting to fill this seat. Every member is eligible to run for the seat, but you must be present to run and to vote.

FYI, the Choctaw Capitol is at Tvshka Homma. The United States Post Office is at Tuskahoma, OK. Even tho we know better, we are going to use Tuskahoma in this web site for the simple reason that folks keep trying to find Tvshka Homma in MapQuest and Google Maps, and it ain't there.

It's the biggest news in years, hoke!

Welcome to the OK Choctaw Tribal Alliance, Inc. web site! Many of you probably know us by one of our shorter names such as the OCTA, or just plain OK Choctaws.

We hope that our site will be many things to many people - not only a source of news and information for our members, but also a way to introduce ourselves and our programs to others. We also wish to provide a place where organizations in the community can post notices of meetings and functions of interest to Native Americans.

If you look at the buttons on the left hand side of the page you will see links labeled Calendar and Submit Your Event. Clicking on Calendar will take you to the page where you can see a schedule of events in traditional, month by month calendar form. If you click on an event on the calendar its complete description will pop up. Many of the descriptions may even have a link marked "map." If you click on that link you will see a map of the location.

We invite you to visit the Submit an Event page where you can fill out a form to send information on your upcoming event to us for posting on the calendar. Please submit your information at the earliest possible date so we will have plenty of time to get it on the Internet. Similarly, we will post flyers on the Flyers & Info page. Visit that page to see flyers on events and information, and to learn how to get your own flyer posted here.

This web site, like all earthly things, will surely change over time as we discover what works and what does not, what is useful and what is not, and what you like and what you don't like. For that reason be sure to attend our general meetings or board meetings to voice your opinion, or to address your comments by email to the Webmaster at the link below.

Yakoke! Thank you for visiting our web site. We hope you visit us on a regular basis and keep us informed of your upcoming events. Please tell all of your friends about our site and let them know that this is a place where they can find out about goings-on in our area.

Chi pisa lachike,

The OK Choctaws

P.S.
Don't forget to join us on the second Saturday of each month for our Indian taco sale.
