2007
was a tough year for the OK Choctaws. The pickup we used to tow
the Indian Taco Trailer was stolen, our riding lawn mower was
stolen, and just when we thought things couldn't get worse,
thieves ripped our building air conditioners apart to steal the
copper coils.However, all
was to improve. The air conditioners were covered by insurance
and we bought steel cages to go over them. Janet Theus told Rick
Jones that she would like to make a donation from the estate of
her mother, Imogene Dawson. And, last but not least, Stella
Long wrote a letter to Chief Pyle describing our pickup woes and
a delegation of our officers and board members went to Durant to
meet with the Tribal Administration.
Here,
in pictures, are the wonderful things that have happened to us
so far in 2008:
The Pickup |
April 2 was anything but a rainy
day for the OCTA. The evening before, James Wallace of the
Nation called Stella and informed her that he would deliver a
pickup to the building the next day. She called the officers and
board members, several of whom convened to welcome the new
truck. (Rushed over like mad might be a better description.)
It is a 2006 Ford F250 Extended Cab Super Duty with a V-10
engine. It is loaded and has amenities like electric trailer
brakes, extendable rear view mirrors, and a bed liner.
Naturally, it has a big ole trailer hitch too. It is just
exactly what we need to pull the trailer around with. As you can
see, Myrtle King pulled a vintage "Hello Choctaw" plate out of
her hat for the occasion.We
wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Chief Pyle, the Tribal
Council, and the Nation for providing us with such a wonderful
truck. We were at our wit's end and you made the sun shine
through the clouds.

The
Riding Lawn Mower |
| Janet Theus made a generous
donation of $1,000.00 from the estate of her mother, Imogene
Dawson. We used it to purchase the badly needed new riding lawn
mower. It not only looks good, but it mows well and as the
second picture shows, it sure goes fast!

The Air Conditioners |
| We fell victim to air
conditioning thieves like so many other organizations have. The
price of copper is very high, so they destroy your air
conditioner to get the copper coils and sell them for scrap
metal. The thieves destroyed two of our air conditioners, which
the insurance replaced. To avoid future thefts we purchased
locking steel cages to protect them. |
